(DUHH!) A while ago I mentioned the possibility of convening an Echolink-based conference that would be run as a traffic net and could function as an adjunct net to the existing HF and VHF nets in the EPA Section. I have been asking around for suggestions as to any existing conference servers that are already linked to repeaters in the Section, but have not gotten a line on any so far. So I have decided it is time to try this concept out using just the Internet, and get the discussion going that way. I have a broadband connection at my house, so I propose to hold an Echolink conference using my station (N3SW) as the host on Wednesday evening 7 January starting at 8:00PM ET. The agenda will be a general discussion of how to use Echolink and Winlink 2000 to support and expand the ARRL NTS traffic nets within EPA. I will function as the NCS. We will run the conference like a traffic net in the first few minutes, then move on to a wider discussion after that. Please spread the word. 73 -Scott Walker N3SW EPA Section Traffic Manager To connect to my station for the upcoming Echolink conference (Wed. evening at 8pm ET) there are two ways to find me in the directory. One is to select "Node Types, Users" in the directory tree and browse down through the list until you find N3SW. The other is to use the menu "Station, Find" and enter N3SW into the search box. One of the items we will discuss will be the timing of future nets. It seems from the feedback that Wednesday evening is not good for a lot of people. 73 -Scott N3SW EPA STM -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For SOTA, chaser just stays home and works the activators. Activators go up on the summit to set up and operate a station. SOTA has a recently formed W3 Association, and a number of the summits are relatively easy to get to. With SOTA, the general requirement is for a portable station. The SOTA folks usually use FT-817's or the like, but any rig portable enough, and capable of being run off a battery small enough to backpack can be used. I'm still working my way through the IOTA information. Area Repeater Association" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following thanks to PARA member Griff NE3I: I had the pleasure of having dinner last night with an old friend, State Senator John C. Rafferty, Jr. who represents my (the 44th) district. We discussed the pending cell phone bill at length. John is very knowledgeable about and has an ongoing interest in Amateur Radio public service activities. He recognizes the real resource that Radio Amateur Operators represent to emergency communications including, without limitation, the RACES and ARES programs. John assured me that House Bill 67 includes an exemption for Amateur Radio operators and since the final bill will have to pass through one of John's committees, he further assured me that the final bill which becomes law will contain an exemption for Amateur Radio mobile communications. I will appreciate it if the addressees to this message circulate this email to their various clubs and amateur radio Auxilliary Communications Services organizations, i.e., (Warminster Amateur Radio Club, the Pottstown Amateur Radio Club, the Philadelphia Area Repeater Association, Montgomery County RACES/ARES and the ARRL Eastern Pennsylvania Section. I think that I have included "the Packrats" -the Mt. Airy VHF Radio Club, Inc in the address). This is very good news. We are fortunate to have a knowledgeable friend like John in a position to preserve the operating privileges and public service responsibilities conveyed to us via our Federal Communications Commission Amateur Radio Operator and Station Licenses. 73, Griff ne3i Robert A. Also there are comparisons of the performance of several digital software packages for RTTY and MFSK16. If your favorite package isn't listed, it may be because it didn't do too well.
