Message-ID: <1038.96.245.160.182.1266979859.squirrel@96.245.160.182> Amateur Radio data mode ROS proving popular Although it's only 3 days since the first HF contact with the new Amateur Radio data mode ROS, it's proving popular with plenty of activity on 14.101 MHz. ROS is a digital spread spectrum mode but with a narrow total occupied bandwidth of about 2.2 kHz. The software has two Symbol Rates: 16 and 1 baud (the latter aimed at weak signals down to -35 dbs of S/N) and can automatically synchronize any Symbol Rate. Initial reports talk of it being able to copy signals so weak that they don't show up on the Waterfall and there are early indications that it is several dB better than Olivia. However, HF with its Fading, Doppler, Multi-Path and Interference is a hazardous environment for digital signals and only time will tell how well it performs against the other modes. One issue the mode has thrown up is the restrictive Amateur Radio License conditions in the USA. Here in the UK we are used to the "Technology Neutral" approach adopted by our regulator Ofcom. This permits us to devise and use any mode we like with any bandwidth as long as the transmission fits within the Amateur band. The United States is not so fortunate, there the FCC specifies which modes Amateurs can use and where. Some Amateurs in the States are concerned that FCC regulations appears to prohibit the use of Spread Spectrum below 420 MHz and ROS is a Spread Spectrum mode. To be fair to the FCC they did try back in 1977 to change from a mode based band plan to one based on bandwidth. At the time the ARRL opposed the change and was successful in defeating it, as a result the development of digital modes was crippled for decades to follow. In recent years the ARRL has been trying to get the FCC to re-introduce band planning by bandwidth and hopefully they will be successful. I will gather a few experienced EME folks for a team committed to define and create an operations plan, with scheduled SSB and CW contacts to be booked, on 432. Please contact me off line if you want to take on or be part of a team to manage an Arecibo operational plan. I had a talk with Dr Nolan, NAIC Director, today about a number of things, including whether Arecibo is at high risk of immediate closure this year. It appars not, to be at risk in the short term, so there is some extended time periods that can be counted on for it to remain open, and they now have a line item in the Federal Budget, that is always subject to change or elimination. But for the near future they are relatively safe. Some very good news...The Arecibo management became very interested in seeing how a previously tossed about idea of small or even home made antennas can perform, and if it was shown that indeed they can, then there is a real possibility that NAIC Arecibo will support multiple EME events per year, with a thread, and media attention of showing how simple antenna equipment can be made by the science/school communities and at least receive voice or CW off the moon. I think a Science fair activity supported by the local EME communities would go very far with good publicity, paricularly if a kid does a project showing the basics of EME, and how with Arecibo, perhaps a 4 to 10 or 15 element yagi or Quad or Quagi will suffice to hear off the moon. Maybe a single kid could be mentored by local EME hams, and go through the design process using COTS modelling tools, and buld and test a series of antennas, quads, Yagis, Quagis, with real EME from Arecibo, then test an report on results. I bet such a science fair project properly done would place with top 10 finish on a national level.... I once built for terrestrial UHF, 432 Quagis for fun out of grape stakes, +12guage house wire, (driven loop) and bulk hardware store aluminium welding rod directors, probably an 8 ft boom that worked very effectively. Drilled tight holes in the wood boom at the prescribed spacings, pushed the aluminum rods trimmed to length, and hot melt glued them to the holes. Was intended to look homemade. Worked very very well. Such a home made antenna that picked signals off the moon, woud present a very media interesting presentation. The exact date is not established, but there will be a test run done in March, stay tuned. The RF chain to be used at Arecibo on 432 is going to be provided by the Arecibo Observatory Amateur Radio Club, and will provide 60 watts to the feed. If we could get a PA donated to bring that up to, say 600 watts, +- I believe that it would make the receive opportunities much easier with modest equipment. Can anyone source a high power PA on 432, to be sent Arecibo for use for this event? Perhaps hand carried by a seasoned EME operator who wants to operate during the event. Contact me off line. I have a meeting with NASA-Ames tomorrow, who has taken notice of EME as a science outreach tool, and is monitoring closely this event. Arecibo in particular, caught their attention. From: "Patrick Barthelow" Date: Sat, February 27, 2010 14:09 To: moon-net at list-serv.davidv.net -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Folks: A meeting with NASA at NASA-Ames yesterday bore fruit as earlier predicted, with an opportunity for collaboration between NASA and Arecibo, and possible regular EME operations from Arecibo in the future. NASA mentioned, that whether this happens, now turns on a critical EME receive test that will happen in March, date as yet undetermined. The test, which we had hoped to do earlier this week, had to be postponed due to operational issues at the Arecibo. NASA and Arecibo would like a well organized test done, and, based on the results, will make a decision of a level of support and interest for future Arecibo EME/Science outreach / Fun projects. As many as several per year. What Arecibo, and NASA want, is to get quality data from as many sources as possible during the test, and a well thought out, standardized form for data collection, and submission for analysis, that includes details of the reception, (a digital audio file recording would be great) listing obviously, time, date, frequency, Make and model, serial number, of each item used at the receive location, Receiver, Preamp, if any,Coax, and station layout used, Antenna type, make, model, Signal strength reports, objective, (precision, if possible) and subjective, and any notes on how the antenna was pointed, whether hand held, or some auto track method. (software used) A careful record of actual Az and El vs time, date, Operator name, location and contact information, and a subjective report by the operator after the test. Photographs, or video of each Station actually used, or in operation, showing key components, Antenna, coax run, interconnects, relays, Receiver preamps used, etc. It is my guess that with all the highly skilled, and dedicated EME station owner operators out here, there are many who have developed their own careful note books and forms for documenting their station performance as it is constantly improved. If there are any who have developed a detailed station configuration and performance report form that is suitable to be groomed into a standardized report form for this Arecibo event, we would love to see it, and perhaps use it for the event. Arecibo and NASA would like to bracket the gamut of stations used, from the least sophisticated, to the most sophisticated. [Maybe not] Surprisingly, with particular interest in unsophisticated, receive-only stations. NASA and Arecibo really want to see proof that easy to build, out of common materials, (welding rod, copper wire, Grape stake or wood lath (1x 2s, etc) booms, Stanley Tape elements, etc, antennas that work, that are buildable by a, say, middle school age child, under adult supervison, and ideally, who has a mentor who can work with the child showing/teaching/explaining how to use software to determine the dimensions and spacing of Yagi Elemnts, driven loops, etc. I think a multi element Quagi on a variety of lengths of wooden boom would be a perfect target home brew antenna, especially if you could A/B compare and document that antenna's performance against a (any) commerical, or more conventional antenna of known characteristics used. I could see a winning Science Fair entry coming for someone out of this exercise. Post test, Data forms need to be promptly mailed (e-mail preferred) in for review by NASA/Arecibo, at a to-be supplied address. All of these operations, and test at Arecibo are being conducted in conformance with operational guidelines, governing operations at Arecibo, and US Part 97 FCC regulation. The frequency suggested for use is 432.045, subject to change and confirmed prior to the test. Modes will be SSB, and CW. Arecibo will use a 432 station lineup provided by the local Arecibo Obervatory Amateur Radio Club, capable of providing 60 watts, or so to feed. The Arecibo Antenna Gain is about 58 dbi at 432. (!) If anyone could loan a higher power PA to the test effort, it would be welcomed. Time is now of the essence, for setup prior to the test later in March. A complete operational, tested, backup 432 EME station, if it could be found, and made available at Arecibo, both for the test, and the event, April 16,17,18 would be a good idea, and if needed, could be shipped, or hand carried, accompanied by the owner-operator who would be the technical support component of it's operation at Arecibo. As mentioned earlier, an organized sked should be made for the EME event, particularly due to the very short (2.5 hour max per day) Arecibo operational windows to the moon. We are looking for volunteers for a team to organize skeds. contact Pat, AA6EG apolloeme at live.com for details.
