From rfhill-l at jtan.com Tue Nov 3 22:37:06 2009 From: rfhill-l at jtan.com (rfhill-l@jtan.com) Date: Tue Nov 3 22:37:36 2009 Subject: [RFHill-L] CW CQ calls available Message-ID: Folks: For several months I have been playing with software from Alex, VE3NEA, and this is the present status: I am running a QS1R SDR receiver with Skimmer Server. It monitors 96 khz on each of 7 bands at the same time, extracts the CQ calls and sends them by telnet. On my shack computer I use a DX cluster program, like SpotCollector, to receive these telnet CQ spots so that I know when friends of mine call CQ on any of the bands with propagation to this area. There is more about how I use this on my QRZ page. Anyone of our local ham community is very welcome to telnet into * cw.wz7i.com*, port 7300 and see if the data is useful to them. The software is always set to its most rigorous call determination algorithm so if you get a spot, there is a high likelihood that the call is correct. During contest weekends it will not be covering the WARC bands and it will not require a CQ to generate a spot. I am not a big contester so the receiver won't be "desensed" by my transmissions. This software is new and so it has not yet been tested in big CW contests but we will see how it works. The computer it is running on can run 7 bands during a normal day at 6% CPU utilization so I expect it will be OK during a contest, but I can't guarantee it. This receiver may not be as sensitive as 7 separate receivers since it has no preamp. But it is on a fairly effective HyTower Jr vertical out in the woods. The antenna is not resonant on 160 so the sensitivity on that band may suffer. Please let me know if you have suggestions for how it might be more useful to the community. It certainly isn't a replacement for the local DX Cluster. I put it in place for my use primarily as a rag chewer and I really enjoy it. But if the local hams can have fun with it, I would be pleased. RF Hill did great in EPA! There are 63 entries nationwide in Class 5A (5 transmitters on portable power), with 4 entries in eastern Penna. The results follow: Call QSO Count Number of Participants Points Score N3NZ 1376 58 5254 (A combined effort of 4 Del. Val. area clubs) W3AI 1416 20 4748 K3DN 1262 31 4322 (Warminster) N3CSF 385 14 1684 (Jonestown Repeater Assoc.) Once again a great effort. We had the highest QSO count, but lagged a little in the bonus points. A small one, very portable, a Honda model EU2000i, 2000 W unit, just a couple years old, hardly used, for $500. A large one, with pneumatic tires, maneuvered like a wheelbarrow, Honda powered, rated 6600 W continuous and 8000 W surge, purchased prior to Y2K, from Northern Tool, used to power shack once, somewhat dusty, for $700. Both are gasoline fueled. If interested give me a call on my cell. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. 73 -- Frank Strenk WA3MGT Frank@ResponseEngineers.com Cell - 215-378-0165 521 North Fourth Street Telford PA 18969-2132 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
