As a possible public event, I was thinking that we might set up a moonbounce station as a demonstration. The idea would not be to make contacts, although any moonbounce contacts would be welcome. The idea would be to receive our own signal bounced off the moon. I think folks, especially kids, would be tickled pink to hear their own voice bouncing back from the moon. Do you know anyone who is into doing moonbounce work, and might be able to advise us? That is just how much is illuminated by the sun. We can still bounce a signal off a new moon. The important thing is whether the moon will be above our local horizon, hopefully high above, during the period when we want to operate. Guess it's time to search for lunar orbital data (sigh!). I just subscribed to the discussion list Moon-net in hopes of getting some practical advice for this project. See the last sentence in the definition of transit below from the Naval Observatory. It does appear that the moon will be high in the sky for a significant portion of a reasonable daylight demo period. Transit: The transit time of a celestial body refers to the instant that its center crosses an imaginary line in the sky - the observer's meridian - running from north to south. For observers in low to middle latitudes, transit is approximately midway between rise and set, and represents the time at which the body is highest in the sky on any given day. At high latitudes, neither of these statements may be true - for example, there may be several transits between rise and set. The transit of the Sun is local solar (sundial) noon. The difference between the transit times of the Sun and Moon is closely related to the Moon's phase. The New Moon transits at about the same time as the Sun; the First Quarter Moon transits about 6 hours after the Sun; the Full Moon transits about 12 hours after/before the Sun; and the Last Quarter Moon transits about 6 hours before the Sun.
